In this paper, the author tries to clarify the concept of general education on the basis of the analysis of general education in the history, analyzes the background of general education in China by describing the development of higher education in China, and taking Peking University as an example, analyzes the characteristic, experience, trend, deficiencies, and enlightenment of general education reform in China research universities.There are five parts in the main body of this paper. The first part discusses the formation and development of general education in western history. The second part analyzes how special education took the place of general education in China higher education from late 1900s, namely the struggle between general education and special education. The third part elaborates on the reform of higher education since 1978, during which period the deficiencies of special education emerged, and thus were rectified through some educational reform; at the same time the theory of general education attracted people's attention gradually. The fourth part takes Peking University as an example to show how China research universities practice general education step by step, and then analyzes both of the Peking University's successful experience and the difficulties in general education practice. The last part, through comparison with the universities of other countries especially America, concludes that it is necessary and inevitable for China research universities to practice general education in the future. Finally, the author proposes some suggestions on the advancement of general education in China research universities. In this paper, the author makes some additions to the concept of general education; and concludes that general education in China will experience three stages, at present, practice of general education in most of the China universities is experiencing the first stage, while only a few research universities have begun the transfer from the first stage to the second. The third stage is an ideal one which needs time and further efforts.
