This thesis is mainiy made up of three parts.Pat 1. A brief introduction .The author made a description of her investigation in it. It includes four aspects. 1. The cognition about reanding after class. Reading after class is the basic reguirement for mother language education, and can not be ignored. 2. The cognition about the instructions for reading afer class .At present ,reading after class is in a state of being blind and disorderly .which directly affects the quality of reading. 3. What the investigation is about and how to investigate it. Based on 《The Chinese Syllabus (experiment revised)》 .there are 20 books recommended to the readers. The auther use them as the content of questionnaire and visting readers. 4. When to do the investigation, who are investigated and the process of it. From November to December of 2004 , the author went to No. 6 middle school of Loudi and ZhenYan middle school of Yiyang to investigate the 181 students from senior3 who would graduate in June, 2004.Part2:Calculate and analyze what the author get from the investigation. The author calculated how many students have read the recommended books and how many haven ' t in these twoschools and get 9 related tables. Through analysis, she got the reasons why the High School students ' reading after class was not that satisfactory. 1.The students are too busy with their study so that they can't afford time to do reading after class. 2. The high prices of some books lead to their lack of reading. 3. Some students don ' t pay great attention to it . 4. Some books are not so popular and students are not so familiar with them, which limits the students enthusiam in the books.Par3. Based on the analysis of the reasons in pat2, the author makes six suggestions about how to improve reading after class. 1. Teachers fully realize the importance of reading after class, and give the rights of reading after class back to the students themselves. ((The Chinese Sullabus)) points out clearly that reading after class is an important part of Chinese teaching and learing. 2. Develop the resourses from the library. The middle schools should spent more money buying all kinds of books .which will add to the number of books stored in libraries. At the same time , we can make full use of the net work to make sure that students can read widely and in different ways. 3. Revise the recommend books properly. 4.
