The Employment Problem In China's Higher Education Transition

With the development of higher education in China, college enrollment has been increasingly expanded. Therefore, it has brought about the facts that the number of college graduates increases rapidly and that it is more difficult for them to obtain employment than ever. The employment problem of graduates has become the focus of attention in the society. This paper will analyze the problem in three parts, including five chapters altogether.The first part consists of two chapters. Chapter one is a presentation of the difficulties for college graduates to get a job. The discussion is conducted on the basis of historical backdrop of college enrollment expansion and the current social and economic conditions in China. Chapter two indicates that the problem is not so serious as most people think, and that there do not exist surplus graduates in China. The present author holds that nowadays the exaggeration of employment difficulty in the society has a bearing on the fact that people have confused ideas or understanding of the definition of two important terms—employment and employment rate.The second part, starting with an examination of the contradiction between supply and demand of employment, makes a detailed explication of the objective causes for the problem. It is divided into two chapters. Chapter three, by taking Zhejiang province as an example, makes specific observations on the employment problem of the graduates of 2003 and 2004. It concludes that the difficulty in finding a job mainly lies in the low level of educational background. Meanwhile, the imbalance between the supply and demand of educational products is another main factor for the employment difficulty. Chapter four, from the perspective of the demand, makes further explanations on the great influence that economic development and reform of the employment system have on this problem.
