With the social development of the 21st century and its new demands for talented people,the English teaching reform has become the key point of the teaching reform in the new century. At present, China's social development and economic construction request a high foreign language quality of the citizens. The foreign language teaching in the senior middle school is an important course to foster the citizens'language quality. It should both meet the students'development in intelligence and motional attitude and the requirements for their obtaining employment, entering a higher school and future existence. At the same time, it also should meet the demands of qualified personnel in economic construction and scientific and technological development. Therefore, there are multifold humanistic and social meanings in senior English teaching, among which listening plays a very important role. As for the present English curriculum in the senior stage of our national elementary education,its educational idea is outmoded and the courses offered lack diversity and selectivity,and it cannot meet the new demands of the senior English curriculum which are proposed for the new situation. For this reason,our State Ministry of Education draws up the English Curriculum Standard For Ordinary Senior Secondary School. According to the Curriculum Standard, the aims of listening teaching are: to educate the strategies of listening; to develop the language sense; to emphasize fostering the abilities of obtaining and disposing information in the process of listening. Its basic techniques are as follows: to remove the interference of such factors as accent and background sound and so on; to grasp the key words; to listen and carry out the directions; to listen the general idea and topic; to ascertain the development orders or logical relations between things; to preview the following content; to understand the intention and attitude of the speaker; to evaluate the listened content; to judge the deep meaning of the paragraph, etc. Based on the years of senior English teaching practice and starting from stating the deep meaning of the concept of listening and the factors affecting it, this thesis explores the theories and practice of the senior English listening teaching in the new curriculum. It makes a deep research on the status, principles, tasks, conditions and main problems of the senior English listening teaching. At the same time it also puts forward some practical ways of listening teaching in the new curriculum in order to achieve the goals of listening techniques. I sincerely hope to provide some theoretical and practical reference value for the reform of the senior English listening teaching and the overall implementation of the new curriculum. This thesis consists of five parts. The first part deeply analyses the intension of listening, the cognitive key elements and the models of listening comprehension. It reveals the nature and characteristics of listening comprehension, summarizing the main factors affecting listening such as the factors of language barriers (linguistics, vocabulary and grammar) , the mental state and cognitive strategies. The second part analyses the basic background, the basic principles and the basic listening technical goals of the English Curriculum Standard, clarifying the relation between the four kinds of languages techniques (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in the senior English teaching. The third part mainly states the listening's important status in English teaching, the principles that should be stuck to, the tasks to be finished, the present situation and the main existing problems. The fourth part discusses in detail that some teaching strategies should be taken in the new senior English curriculum, including: firmly establishing new teaching ideas and paying great attention to educating the factors of non-intelligence; realizing the transition of teachers'roles in accordance with times; strengthening the students'basic techniques training and enriching their language knowledge; fostering the students'ability of thinking and focusing on their comprehensive development; strengthening instructing the students'learning strategies and optimizing their learning patterns; making full use of multimedia to promote the classroom teaching efficiency. The fifth part puts forward a kind of listening teaching model in the new senior English curriculum. It consists of three stages, namely pre-listening,while-listening and post-listening stages to improve listening teaching, analyzing the aim to be reached and the tasks to be finished in each stage.
