OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a "Quality of Life Scale for Junior High School Students"(JHSS-QOLS). To investigate the quality of life and its influencing factors among Junior High School Students of Three-Gorges Reservoir in Chongqing. METHODS: 1.The development of scale: JHSS-QOLS was developed with programmed decision methods(nominal group and focus group). The item pool was certified by experts. Seven methods were used in item selection after a pilot study that 130 junior high school students had been recruited in. The QOL data measured from 278 junior high school students were used to evaluate feasibility, validity and reliability of JHSS-QOLS. 2.Investigative methods:Collecting data by the means of stratified cluster sampling. 672 students were sampled from Three-Gorges Reservoir in Chongqing,and their quality of life including objective status and subjective well-being were tested by JHSS-QOLS. Multiple stepwise regression analysis was utilized to study the major factors affecting QOL of students in Three-Gorges Reservoir in Chongqing. RESULTS: 1.The development of scale:(1)Formed the 48-item JHSS-QOLS,it includes four domains: material life condition(15 items),physical health(7 items),psychological health(16 items)and social function(8 items)。(2)The test-retest correlation coefficients of JHSS-QOLS for material life condition,physical health,psychological health,social function and the overall scales were 0.902,0.816,0.837,0.804 and 0.897 respectively. Cronbach's alpha coefficient on material life condition,physical health,psychological health,social function and the overall scales were 0.7910,0.7362,0.8969,0.7205 and 0.9201 respectively.(3)The structure of the scale was similar to the theory construction. We took WHOQOL-BREF as a criterion to evaluate JHSS-QOLS. The Criterion validity with WHOQOL-BREF was 0.815. 2.The study of quality-of-life and its influencing factors: (1)Generic quality of life of junior high school students in Three-Gorges Reservoir in Chongqing stayed in its mean level. Four dimensions score were placed between 56~77. Thirteen factors score were placed between 45~82.(2)Score of material life condition dimension was lower than that of physical health,psychological health and social function dimensions among Junior High School Students of Three-Gorges Reservoir in Chongqing.(3)Score of social contact factor was wel(l>75 scores),however,Scores of school toilet room status,community serve,and vitality factors were poorer(<60 scores)(.4)Gender,grade,chronic disease,poor vision,sleep,physical exercise,structure of family,education of parents and parental rearing style were important influencing factors in quality of life of students. CONCLUSIONS: 1.JHSS-QOLS is a valid and reliable instrument to assess the quality of life of junior high school students quantitatively. 2.To improve quality of life of students,not only material life condition but also physical health,psychological health and social function should be strengthened. Measures should be enhanced to lighten the learning load.
