Extracurricular Reading is the main path that students obtain knowledge. It is very important to development students' imagination, to edify their esthetical sentiment, to raise their ability in discriminating right and wrong, kindness and evilness, to enrich their spiritual world, to promote the formation of their right moral concepts. It has vital influence upon their studies, growth, and life-long development. Whether the syllabus of Chinese teaching in the past or the present course standard lay importance on students' extracurricular reading.As the three-gorge reservoir area locates out of the way and its economy and culture relatively fall behind, the reading atmosphere isn't thick. To know the extracurricular reading status of junior high school students in this area, their reading interest, reading contents, reading approaches and reading time, the author designed an extracurricular reading questionnaire for junior high school students and carried on the questionnaire for 974 students of Grade One and Grade Two at 10 high schools in Fuling, Chongqing(Fuling No.1 High School, Fuling No.2 High School, Fuling No.3 High School, Fuling No.6 High School, Fuling No. 14 High School, Fuling No. 15 High School, Fuling No. 18 High School, Fuling High School, High School Attached to Fuling Teachers College).After the investigation, an analysis of the present reading condition is carried on with the statistical result ,the causes and reasons are explored and some corresponding countermeasures to the problems put forth.The thesis includes five parts. Part One is Introduction, stating the range , arguments, sense, thoughts and approaches of the research. Part Two is Extracurricular Reading Status of Junior High School Students in the Three-Gorge Reservoir Area . From the five aspects of students, teachers, schools, families, and communities, it narrates the extracurricular reading status of junior high school students in this Area, Part Three is Present Problems and Cause Analyses. It points out the problems and the causes of extracurricular reading status of junior high school students in the Three-Gorge Reservoir Area ,such as lack of importance laid by many sides concerned, the limited reading condition, thin reading atmosphere, less reading interest, unclear reading contents, not enough method instruction, reading time shortage, not good check implementation ,etc. Part Four is Countermeasure Studies, suggesting four countermeasures to these problems. One is to integrate all-side's resources, provide reading facilities; Two is to create strong atmosphere, stirring up interest in reading; Three is to recommend excellent reading materials, guiding reading method; Four is to assure the reading time, paying attention to reading effects. Part Five is Conclusion, re-stressing the importance of extracurricular reading .Teachers should use effective ways and approaches to reinforce extracurricular reading status of junior high school students in the Three-Gorge Reservoir Area and to enhance their reading ability.This thesis tries to explore these four aspects, looking for ways and approaches of enhancing junior high school students' extracurricular reading, to guide concrete extracurricular reading fulfillment and to make them set up the cognition of reading, to develop good reading habit, to promote their extracurricular reading to go on smoothly, healthily and effectively, to enlarge their visual fields, to enrich their knowledge, to improve their reading ability massively and to lay solid foundation for their thriving growth and life-long development.
