Objective: To study the determinants of work ability and the correlation between occupational stress effect and work ability, the primary and junior high school teachers have been investigated. Methods: The occupational stress effect and the work ability of teachers from the primary and junior high school in Urumqi were checked by cluster sampling. Among them, the physiological functions of 220 teachers and the laboratory measurements of 191 teachers were measured. Results: 1) The mental health conditions of teachers in primary and junior high school are worse than the average of nationwide adults, and the symptoms are obvious. There are significant differences in mental health among ethnicities. On mental health condition, the short work-length teachers are better than the long work-length teachers, the junior high school teachers are better than the senior high school teachers, the teachers who teach mathematics, physics, chemistry, politics, history and biology are better than the teachers who teach Chinese and English, the full-time job teachers are better than the part-time job teachers, the higher academic career teachers are better than the lower academic career teachers. On the degree of psychological satisfaction, the junior high school teachers are higher than the senior high and the primary school teachers, the mathematics teachers are higher than the other subject teachers, the part-time job and the high academic teachers are highest than the others.On absentee-rate, the female teachers, the junior and senior high school teachers and the lower academic career teachers are higher than the others. 2) On the chronic muscle skeleton injury morbidity, it is different in different ethnicities, the female teachers are higher than the males, the long work-length teachers are greater than the short work-length teachers, the senior high school teachers are higher than the junior high and the primary school teachers. On sensitivity of reaction and movement, the male teachers are lower than the female teachers, the long work-length teachers are lower than the short-length teachers, the senior high school teachers are lower than the junior high school teachers and the primary school teachers, the physics and chemistry teachers are lower than the other subject teachers. There are more male hypertensives than females. The proportion of hyperglycemia and hyperlipemia of the primary and senior high school teachers is higher than junior high school teachers. 3) The work ability varies between gender and among ethnicities, with work ability of males being more excellent than that of females. The long work-lenght teachers are excellent than the short work-length teachers, the high academic career teachers are excellent than the low academic career teachers. In work ability ranking of superiority and good and moderately and poor in Han ethnic group, the male teachers are higher than the female teachers, the long work age teachers are higher than the short work age ones, the high academic career teachers are higher than the others in the constituent ratio of superiority and good and moderately. The main determinants of teachers ' work ability are gender, work ages, grade, mental health state, psychological satisfaction degree, absentee-rate, chronic muscle skeleton injury of the neck and waist, the number of diseases and hypertension. The work ability index is negatively correlated with the score of SCL-90, absentee-rate and chronic muscle skeleton injury of the neck and waist, however, it is positively correlated with psychological satisfaction degree. Conclusion: The mental healthcondition of teachers in primary and junior high school are worse than the average of nationwide adults. The mental health state is different among ethnicities, work ages, grades, subjects, academic careers, part-time or full-time jobs. The morbidity of chronic muscle skeleton injury is different among genders, ethnicities and grades. The work ability is different among different genders, grades, academic careers. The main determinants of work ability are mental health state and chronic muscle skeleton injury. The correlation between occupational stress effect and the work ability of teachers is closely correlated with occupational stress.
