Effective evaluation of teachers' professional development is an indispensable part ofprofessional development. On one hand, a complete professional development relies on theevaluation. On the other hand, effective evaluation could facilitate professional development.Based on the review of recent achievements in the field of professional development andevaluation of American primary and secondary school teachers, the purpose of the study is toinvestigate the evaluation of professional development of American primary and secondaryschool teachers. The paper tries to explore the formation and characteristics of the evaluation,and predicts its tendency in the future. On the basis of the discussions above, the paper thengives tentative suggestions on the evaluation of professional development of China's primaryand secondary school teachers. The paper is divided into four sections as follows:Chapter One gives the definitions related to evaluation of teachers' professionaldevelopment, and points out the significance of the study.Chapter Two analyzes the present situation of the evaluation of professional developmentof American primary and secondary school teachers. The chapter begins by exploring into thecauses leading to the formation of the evaluation, and goes on with detailed analysis of itscharacteristics, existing problems and the reasons underneath the problems.Chapter Three predicts the tendency for the evaluation of professional development ofAmerican primary and secondary school teachers. As in America the evaluation has beenattached greater importance;students' learning outcomes will be concerned;the paper predictsthat will be stressed on unintended factors in the future development of the evaluation.Meanwhile, the collection of information on improvement of students' learning outcomes willbe more meticulous.Chapter Four talks the evaluation of professional development of China's primary andsecondary school teachers and gives some suggestions on the implementation of theevaluation.
