Warner Wilson presented the first review of subjective well-being in 1967. So far, there have had a great deal of researches on subjective well-being(SWB) in the Western. But the domestic researchers have began the research since 1990's. In the decades since 1990's, domestic investigations into SWB have evolved and became one hot spot in psychology field. So far, the domestic researches on SWB are mainly argued from the view of personality trait, but there is few argued from the angle of motive. Personal strivings is one kind of motive approach, and represent the new trend of personality. In accordance with the defect in the field of SWB, the study researched the SWB of college students from the trait approach and the motive approach at the same time to richen the research on personality and SWB.The method of questionnaire was adopted to conduct the research on college students. There were 2 steps: first, revising the Striving Assessment Scales and Mood Form. After the separate translation of psychological specialist and discussion, we translated the scales into Chinese. After preliminary test, the result reflected that the revised Mood Form had good reliability and validity, and the Striving Assessment Scales also had good content validity. Secondly, formal measure was implemented. This time, the scales of the NEO personality - Five Factor Inventory(60 items) , Striving Assessment Scales(25 items) , Students Life Satisfaction Scales(36 items) , Mood Forms(9 items) were added to the formal questionnaire all together. And 533 valid data were collected and were analyzed. According to model specification and confirmatory factor analysis, the result indicated that both personality trait and personal strivings had influences on SWB. Besides, the influence of personality trait on SWB was greater than the influence of personal strivings on SWB. By correlation and regression analysis, the study deeply analyzed the relationship between five dimensions of The Big Five personality trait and SWB, five dimensions of personal strivings and SWB, personality trait and personal strivings. At last, the study analyzed the effect of demographic variables on personality trait , personal strivings and SWB.
