| The English language is a tool with which we gain the knowledge of culture and science, get the information from all over the world and communicate with the people from other countries. With the development of society, more and more qualified personnel with synthetical knowledge of English are needed. As a result, English education in elementary schools is becoming more and more important. However, English education in elementary schools in China has fallen behind, as it emphasizes the knowledge but neglects the skills, which is influenced much by the view of education for examination. So English education in China can not meet the requirement of social economic, scientific and cultural exchange. This calls for an overall reform of English teaching, including teaching method, curriculum, syllabus, teaching material and education system. Materials play an important role in curriculum, since they have much to do with the content and form of teaching and learning, and are the focal point of teaching reform. The use of"Senior English for China"(Revised Version) (R.SEFC) brings us new motivation in English teaching and leads us to a brighter future. But we have found many problems of R.SEFC during the 3 years using of it, which needs further study and research.On the basis of analysis of R.SEFC and investigation on the using of it, in the light of related theories of language, language learning, language teaching and teaching materials, the thesis points out the existing problems in using of R.SEFC, analyzes the reasons to cause the problems and offers the measures to improve the situation.The thesis consists of four parts. The first part serves as introduction, which focuses on the background information, like the position of English education, the importance of English education reform, the coming out of R.SEFC and the objectives, content and significance of the study and research. The second part discusses the related theories of teaching materials, like the definition, function and types, and the theories of compiling and evaluating teaching materials. The third part analyzes the writing form of R.SEFC by using the theories talked above and the significant features of it. The forth part is the research of the using of R.SEFC and points out the problems. In the last part, from the discussion of the problems, the author finds out the causes and gives suggestions in revising and using R.SEFC. |
