This thesis is composed of four parts. Part one introduces the influence of Education through Art, and the status quo of researches on this book. The defects in preceding researches motivated the author to raise the subject of her research. Part two tells the life experience of Herbert Read , his motivation in writing Education through Art, and the cultural background against which the book was written. Herbert Read' s idea of education through art is to promote world peace through education. The immediate cause for Herbert Read to advocate self-expression teaching method is also analyzed in this part. The focus of the present thesis is contained in the third part. Following the logical thought of Herbert Read, the author elaborates on the content of Education through Art. The theme of Education through Art is analyzed and explained, followed by an illustration of Herbert Read' s views on education and art education, as well as the present author' s comment. The fourth part is a summary of studies on Education through Art.Following the method of language analysis, the present thesis tries to reveal the true implication underlying Herbert Read' s ambiguous words. Herbert Read' s ideas and the source of his ideas are compared, so as to illuminate that which Herbert Read had really assimilated. Based on a comprehensive and profound understanding of Education through Art, the thesis tries to make an objective appraisal of Herbert Read' s views on education and art education from historical and dialectical perspective.
