With the development of industrial and residential suburbanization in cities in China, the phenomenon that the working place of urban population mismatches the dwelling appears more clearly. The vitality of the center of a city depends on not only local inhabitants (nighttime population) but also daily commuters and other people who take part in economic activities (daytime population). The latter has important effect on downtown in the field of economy, society, culture, environment and etc. In the developing meaning, daytime population has a bigger and more active role in downtown than nighttime population. The study of daytime population can be traced to 1930s in Europe. Nowadays, the positive research and application abroad have matured. However, in China though we are familiar with the definition of Daytime Population, it is difficult to count its number and its research is still at the basic stage.Luwan district is a typical central region in Shanghai with distinct character of downtown daytime population. So I take this region as the study example and get the profile of daytime workers, based on the data from economic census and the first and second basic units census by mainly using spatial analysis methods and statistical methods. Then the effect brought about by the character of daytime population is also evaluated and some proper advices are put forward according to it.Through the study, the thesis concludes some basic characters as below, as Shanghai's central district, the number of daytime population in Lu Wan district is huge, about 517.2 thousand people (325.2 thousand people are daytime workers). However, the ratio of day to night population is only 1.6, which is very low, especially compared with other developed foreign countries. It's necessary to reduce residential population and raise that ratio. The education level of daytime workers is relatively high, and their commuting distance is not far. The incoming commuters are younger. The structure of employment of daytime workers has great difference. In the north, service is dominant, while in the south, industry controls. The proportion of manufacturing workers and builders is a bit so big that has negative effect on the development of the function of CBD in central city, weakening the strength of the line of fiance and trade. The number and attribute of daytime population interrelates the traffic and infrastructure resources, industry, culture and spirit, environment and etc.
