English writing is one of the important abilities of English learning aims to develop, and the teaching of writing in high school is the basis of that in college. To some extent, a good foundation the students lay in high school will have a good effect on their development later when they study English in colleges. However, writing is a neglected area in English teaching in high schools. Why Sentence Structure Matters ? Although ordinary conversations , personal letters, and even some types of professional writing (such as newspaper stories) consist almost entirely of simple sentences, your university or college instructors will expect you to be able to use all types of sentences in your formal academic writing. Writers who use only simple sentences are like truck drivers who do not know how to shift out of first gear: they are able to drive a load from one place to the destination (eventually), but they would have a great deal of trouble getting there. If you use phrases and clauses carefully, your sentences will become much more interesting and your ideas, much clearer.I tested the students' writing ability and found that they were poor in writing, especially in sentence writing . How can I manage to improve the high school students' ability of writing ? I got an idea from the investigations made by Norm Chomsky that sentence combining is a most helpful way. The ability to write effectively cannot be built within a short period of time. It can only be achieved by practicing step by step from word to sentence and then to passage. After nine months of practicing, the students' syntactic maturity has improved a lot, 'word -sentence- paragraph' training has proved to be an effective way to improve high school students' ability of English writing.
