Classical Chinese teaching is the emphasis of Chinese teaching in high school, whil e the students usually have difficulties in learning the function words. It delivers better re suits when the teachers grasp an appropriate teaching method of explaining the key and d ifficult points. The method that teaching Chinese function words step by step explains the complexity of human’s cognition and the fundamental knowledge of function words. Th us in order to promote the development of students’ learning skills and self-awareness ca pability, teachers should follow the process which is from concrete to abstract and primar y to advanced in an orderly way. This project is to propose a new teaching strategy by ap plying the principle of step-by-step method to teaching function words and by using theo retic analysis and case study, which results in providing some guidance and help to high s chool function words teaching.This paper includes five chapters. The first chapter is to define the characteristics of the functions words and step-by-step teaching method, and to point out the deficiency of the current research. So the foundation of the step-by-step teaching method for high scho ol function words can be built, hence proving the necessity of this project.The second chapter is about the introduction and classification of the high school fu nction words and the explanation of the function words’effect on classical Chinese, all o f which help the teachers have a comprehensive understanding of function words before t hey can propose any effective teaching strategies. The third chapter is to analyze the crucial role that step-by-step method plays in teaching, which determines the necessity of the research to this subject.The forth chapter defines the major and secondary content in high school Chinese te aching. Based on the priority, a new teaching strategy can be proposed, hence guiding tea chers how to teach from primary to secondary.The fifth chapter is to introduce the development of the function words. The step-by-step method can be proposed according to the development, which helps the students ma ster the function words by tracing back the origin.The last chapter is the conclusion that the step-by-step method plays a crucial role in teaching and learning. We should keep digging and investigating in order to benefit the h igh school function words teaching.
