Modern prose is a literary style with strong literary characteristics. They take up a large proportion in Chinese text books. Teaching the modern prose becomes the key point in Chinese teaching. However, cultivating the abilities of reading and understanding is the keystone in traditional Chinese teaching, the ability of appreciation seems unimportant. In addition to the utilitarian purpose of passing examinations, there are many problems in prose teaching. People tend to attach great importance to analyzing and understanding, and ignore the influence of the whole body; they stress a lot on training and ignore enriching their feelings and they put emphasis in importing the so-called "standard answers" and ignore individual understanding. Now we have two newly published books, "Course Standard of the Full -Time Compulsory Education" (published in July. 2001) and "Chinese Course Standard of Common Senior Middle School" (published in April,2003), the writers of which devoted much attention to literary appreciation and made clear and specify demands on different periods.In this thesis, the author starts from the type of prose and does a thorough research on the teaching of modern prose discriminating taste by depending on western aesthetic principles, modern study theories, psychological and Chinese educational theories, drawing lessons from traditional Chinese literary appreciation theory, absorbing the experience of Chinese education, drawing support from modem educational information and numbers of teaching cases.Firstly, the author expounds the concept of modern prose on Chinese teaching in middle school, interpret its style characteristics, then exposes the concept of literary appreciation on Chinese teaching in middle school, emphasize the status in teaching. After that, the author researches the problems of Chinese teaching from documents to text books and Chinese teaching implementation. What's more, the author also explains the necessity and urgency. From the third chapter, it comes to the principle part. Some proposals on how to appreciate modern prose in Chinese teaching from the basic appreciating principles to the process and particular methods are elaborated in this part, and some requirements of realizing prose appreciation are added as well.
