Since occupational burnout was first put forward by American clinical psychologist — Freudenberger in 1974, it has been a focus in psychological studies. Occupational burnout among counselors has drawn a lot of attention of the researchers. And it makes much sense to study occupational burnout among institute counselors in our country.In order to find the prevalence, extent, correlates on demographics, work-related factors of occupational burnout among institute counselors, and to discover the relation between self-esteem level, level of coping styles, personality factors and occupational burnout, this research have 80 institute counselors measured on MBI—HSS, 16PF, SES and Coping Styles test. At the same time, their demographics and work-related factors were also collected. Besides, some typical subjects were interviewed, too. The prevalence and extent of occupational burnout among human profession workers was also studied as a compare.The results show that the prevalence and extent of occupational burnout among institute counselors is lower than the average of that among other human profession workers. The effect of age, gender, marital status, career time on occupational burnout among institute counselors is unclear. The counselors with higher education show a lower extent on occupational burnout. The extent of occupational burnout among counselors in middle schools is lower than that in colleges. Job character and working load' role on occupational burnout among institute counselors remains unclear. A higher self-esteem level indicates a lower occupational burnout extent. Negative coping styles have a significant positive relation with occupational burnout extent. Many personality factors are closely related with occupational burnout. The interviews also studied the correlates of occupational burnout, and collected a lot of advice on the intervention of occupational burnout among institute counselors.In conclusion, this research studied the status and correlates of occupational burnout among institute counselors. What is more, it predicted the trend of this problem, and raised some feasible advice on maintaining the occupational health of institute counselors.
