From historical, dialectic and materialistic point of view, this research makes a scientific, objective and rational understanding of the 100-year history and laws of school-operation of Suzhou's basic education on the basis of the culture and the times, so as to accomplish a new cultural awakening.Shifting from imperial examination system to modernized school system, the modern schools in Suzhou, with the marks of Wu (Suzhou Area) Culture, are the outcomes of its political, economical and social development over the time. Surprisingly, from the 100-year developing tracks of those more than 100 schools, we find that all of those schools experienced great hardships at the beginning, but the schools have been operated with diligence, modesty, ingenuity and flexibility, and their unique and charming school cultures have been formed with their educational ideals of broadness and kindness, and with their educational spirits of science and truth.Researching into the common cultural characteristics of this cultural group is the same as providing valuable spiritual nourishment and powerful developing drive for the establishment of unique Suzhou educational characteristics. The ultimate purpose of this research is not only to call on more and more people of virtue in the society to contribute their enthusiasm, wisdom and power for the survival and development of those 100-year-old schools, but also to inquire rationally the historical developments and cultural traditions of Suzhou modern school system.
