In the time of economic globalization, people with different languages from different countries meet more and more frequently. So it is generally believed that the goal of learning a foreign language at this age is to communicate. However, due to the continual rigid examination system in China, many English teachers, especially those in the rural schools, are still focusing their attention mainly on the mastery on the grammar and vocabulary whereas the development of learners' speaking abilities are largely ignored. The rigid examination system drives teachers and students to lay their eyes on dealing with passing examination while the development of oral skills has been largely ignored. As a result, when they come to city to start their high school life, the students from rural area cannot catch up with their classmates and even cannot understand what the teacher says in class. In recent years, the researches on how to improve the students' oral communication ability have been conducted in colleges and universities. However, such researches seldom have been carried out at Basic-education sector. So far almost no research has been conducted with regard to learners from rural areas. Any research centered on this aspect will be of greatsignificance.Hence, based on the analysis of the current situation of the students'oral communication ability and the causes to it, this article aims to findsome specific means to improve their oral communication ability accordingto the characteristics of the students from rural areas. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one mainly discusses the conception of oral communication ability and feasibility of students' oral communication ability improvement. Chapter two expounds on the reasons why the students' oral communication ability is low . Chapter three brings forward strategies to improve the students' oral communication ability. Chapter four analyzes the effect of teaching. Chapter five offers some suggestions on some important points teacher should pay special attention to in teaching procedure.
