After-class reading interest is a kind of interest that students have in books and reading activity. Being an active psychological inclination that students probe into the contents and meaning of the reading materials, it exerts active influence upon the students' study as well as their physical and psychological health. The present educational situation in China has influenced the healthy development of this interest, for on the one hand, educational institutions, families and the society have not paid sufficient attention to the cultivation of this interest and therefore it lacks the efficient instruction; on the other, the traditional reading conception has been weakened with the quick development of science and technology and the widening of information transmission ways. By adopting the methods of questionnaires, interviews and literature retrieve and based on the Chinese teaching practice, this thesis aims to probe this problem and accordingly brings forward the ways and means of cultivating middle school students' after-class reading interest in the picture- reading era.This thesis is divided into three parts.The first part starts with the importance of after-class reading in Chinese learning, proceeds with the analysis of the reasons why the picture-reading era occurs and the challenges this era offers to the traditional reading conceptions, and finally summarizes the significance of cultivating middle school students' reading interest.Based on the research of the present situation of middle school students' reading interest, the second part analyzes this situation and its origins. It conducts an explorative study in some major problems like middle school students' multi-value tendencies and randomness in reading purpose, narrow scope in contents selecting engendered by picture and entertainment-oriented reading, and addiction to computer in terms of reading methods that results in the bad reading habits. In addition, it explores the subjective and objective factors that lead these problems came into being.By summing up the experience of Chinese teaching and following the principle of steering after-class reading interest cultivation, the third part raises tentatively the following opinions, i.e., to inspire the reading interest cultivation via taking advantages of class teaching, to cultivate students' extensive reading interest and habit via promoting after-class reading instructions, to create the environment and develop the ways and means of cultivating reading interest in picture-reading era via the joint force between families, schools and the society, and to cultivate the durability of reading interest.Special to be mentioned is that new opinions in creating an extensive reading atmosphere and developing active and healthy after-class reading interest are put forward in this thesis according to the features of picture-reading Era.
