Since education for all-round development was advocated in China Educational Reform Development Program in 1993, teaching activities on different levels have been flourishing. The method of teaching on different levels is a teaching strategy conducting teaching activities with the amount of groups divided on the basis of students' learning possibilities and working on the premise of diversity of students' learning, with the aim that instructional objects, content of courses and teaching methods are in keeping with students' know-how and cognitive competence. Therefore, it ensures that teaching activities accord with the zone of proximal development and then turn the ZPD into current level in order that students' cognitive competence will advance continuously in teaching activities. This strategy appears to be an effective way of solving individual differences and optimizing single teaching. However, a large number of experiments of teaching on different levels show that it may also bring abuse of students' development. Consequently, the existing experience should be summed up carefully for perfection of teaching on different levels.Lanhua No. 3 Middle School started reforming teaching method in September, 2001. Ever since, it has broken the teaching methods of parallel classes and has implemented teaching on different levels method by dividing senior middle school students' into two levels according to their grades. The writer sampled 600 senior middle school students, 70 senior middle school teachers and some housemasters at random investigating and analyzing in order to find out the effect of method of teaching on different levels on students, teachers and the school. It is expected to show the facts of exploring teaching on different levels and to provide information, summarize lessons and experience for a more scientific, realistic implementation of this teaching method for the purpose of improving teaching quality and stimulating the healthy, all-round development of students. Meanwhile, the paper provides strategies according to the problems and reforming foundation and measures of improvement.The paper investigates the issues such as the degree of satisfaction, influence of students' learning, mental pressure, layered classroom management, the effect on teachers and school development. It combines investigation and study with literature search, qualitative study with quantitative study, using literature searching to study both the researches on teaching on different levels in China and abroad and policy documents in an all round way. The questionnaire of the students, teachers and housemasters with the supplements of informal discussions and interviews collects the concerning contents and makes the survey thorough, vivid and rich. Then, SPSS software package is explored to analyze the collected data and the students' grades of college entrance exams before and after implementation of teaching on different levels for quantification data.The paper is composed of three parts. The first part starts with the introduction. Part Two is the investigation and analysis of implementation of teaching on different levels in Lanhua No. 3 Senior Middle School. The third part mainly contains problems, implication and suggestions of teaching on different levels.
