This paper is set in order to study junior and senior high language teaching materials published by People's Education Press since the foundation of New China, making a bid for different historical period classical election longitudinal analysis of Chinese teaching in secondary schools to explore the scientific path to compiling teaching materials. It reviews the development of classical Chinese teaching, summarizes the successful experience for ancient and modern classical election, and then focuses on the analysis of the classical election under the guidance of two teaching ideas of language training and literature, setting high school textbooks published by People's Education Press for examples. According to the five-stage division, namely the first two stages, consciousness period, lost period, exploration phase, and integration phase, the paper sorts out preliminarily the process of contemporary classical Chinese language teaching evolution. On this basis, as far as four sets of teaching materials, that is to say, the representatives of Literature Teaching ideas of 1954 edition of the "Literature" materials and of language training and teaching ideas in the 1963 version, the 1988 edition of textbooks, and the integration of these two teaching ideas in the 2000 edition of textbooks, the paper makes a comparison concerning the number of the texts on the election, the location of the election, the age distribution and the proportion of the texts and the style classification and scheduling system. It analyzes such issues as the wavering number of the poems, fuzzy bewildering sequence of the texts, contradictory classification and mixed compilation, and the abstract narrow standard text election, which is the content and form of a text should both be perfect. In the opinion of the writer, to improve effectively the quality of the text, it is necessary to correctly understand the nature of Chinese language, to master the law of classical Chinese teaching and to set accurate and reasonable teaching aims; textbooks must grasp the compiling principle, and properly handle the classics and the spirit of times, the model and the acceptance, ideological conflicts and interest of the texts; elections must distinguish scientifically text function, highlight cultural essence of the election materials, and fully play the unique role.
