For several centuries, Indian women's status was very low. The females had been deprived the opportunities and the rights of education. Indian women's higher education has developed after independence in 1947. There are many similar situations in China and India. And women's higher education has some commonness in China and India. In recent years, the two countries have increased intercourses in many areas, such as trades, education, culture and so on. Based on the commonness existing in the two countries'women's higher education and attentions to women's higher education from all over the world, it's very important for us to understand the Indian women's higher education. It will give us some positive significance on women's higher education.This paper focuses on the history and development of women's higher education in India, using literature method, comparative method, logic analyzing method. Apart from the preface, the main body consists of four chapters.The first chapter reviews the development of women's education before the independence in India. After reviewing the shapes of women's education in ancient and in middle age India and the development of women's education under colonial rule, the paper reviews the origin and development of modern women's higher education. Then it discusses the features and impetus of women's higher education before independence.The second chapter inspects the development of Indian women's higher education on three visual angles which are the general situation, the structure, the ways and contents after independence. At last, the paper are concluded the features of women's higher education after independence in India.The third chapter makes a simple analysis of the development of women's higher education. There are two main contents. First is the analysis of thoughts and aims of women's higher education. Second is the analysis of promotion factor of women's higher education.The fourth chapter compares with the women's higher education in China and India firstly. Then the paper analyzes the problems existing in women's higher education, the obstacles restricting the development, and the measures of reform. At the end of the paper, it sums up some experiences and proposes some suggestions in order to promote the development of women's higher education in the two countries.
