There are great achievements in the basic musical education field during its developing procedure since our country was founded. However, under the new historical situation, current educational system isn't suitable requirement of quality education, such as ideas, materials, methods, means and evaluation. Therefore, our country made a new Musical Course Standard of Compulsory Education (experimental draft), which emphasize the value of appreciating beauty, of creative development, of social relation, of cultural transmission. It has a great magnificence in developing music education in middle school. But the Course Standard doesn't formulate the position and function of light music in middle school, nor does make it clearly whether we should take light music into classroom or not. During our teaching process, we find that light music has been enjoyed by most of students. At the same time, music teaching classroom also need it. Many students and teachers hope that popular music can be drawn into the school classroom. But the theoreticians regard it as a shallow meaning music form, so the light music can't be taken into the classroom in the middle school, especially the popular music. Then the problem is whether we can draw it into our middle school classroom?The present research is aimed at studying the problem. It is based on the theories of music. So it's necessary to rethink about musical education in middle school. It is truly said that popular music has two-side characteristic. There is no doubt that some words in popular songs are not suitable for the teenagers. It has negative effect to them. But It's a fact that most school students are fond of it. In addition, there are so many excellent works in this field. We can't refuse it because of its bad effects. We should treat it dialectically. It's wrong to accept and to deny it in an all-round way. There is a available way, which can be used to test whether popular music can be taken into the classroom, that is though teaching practise; through testing in part of school; though experimental teaching.The author's view is that: we should analyse the characteristic, function and result of popular music deeply from every aspect, facing the contradictory between popular music and formal musical teaching. Also the paper gives a specific analysis of the importance and position of musical education in middle school. Therefore, the author states that it is impossible and unreal to refuse the popular music. We can absorb some excellent pieces of it into our teaching. On the base of it, the paper make a discussion about how to adapt to requirement of students mentality; how to be close to real life of students; especially how to treat the popular music in middle school; how to lead students to understanding it rightly and so on.The thesis consists of four parts. The first part introduces the present situation of musical education in middle schools and states the background, purpose and necessity of the research. It also reviews the historical literature of the study. The second part makes a conclusion about the historical development, materials and function of musical education in middle school. The third part focuses on stating the position and function of the popular music. And gives a concrete analysis about e the contradictory between popular music and formal musical teaching. The fourth part is the key point and difficulty of the paper. The author summarizes the reasons why we should take the popular music into teaching classroom. Meanwhile, gives some constructive strategies about music education in middle school.
