Contemporary Chinese education should enhance the humanistic spirit and pay attention to real life, "the extension of Chinese is the same as the extension of life. " So, what does the extension of Chinese mean, besides the current national language course? Besides tradional culture and regional culture, what resources should be selected in some cities with developed economy and culture, when we develop a school-based curriculum?At the end of the 20th century,Chinese society entered the era of popular culture with the tremendous changes of China' s social and economical affairs, then cultural fields has also undergone tremendous changes. This has told us:Today, the school can not monopolize education, it has to coordinate the effect of school education,families,people around children, and the popular media. Especially in some cities with developed economy, students have come into contact with popular culture because of the popularty of television, computer, Internet and so on. However, popular culture is still absent in Chinese curriculum though it is a kind of popular culture in modern society. That' s because popular culture itself is commerial and entertaining. What' s worse, some educators didn' t pay enough attention to the active effect of popular culture.It will be the regret of Chinese teaching if students are still strongly attracted by popular culture but Chinese classroom instruction definitely refuse to accept popular culture. So, popular culture should be totally developed and exploited in Chinese curriculum.This essay mostly contents document study. It is based on some achievements of curriculum theory, study theory, new course reform theory, popular culture and some inference about the present educational development by UNESCO. It discusses the course value and educational functions under the background of new course criteria.
