In the information age, online games, as the representation of new technology and new culture, have become one of the most important entertainments of teenagers, and have great influence on their learning, living and cognizing ways. Online games are the simulation of real life; embody the needs of new culture in information age. So that online games themselves have some educational value. Therefore, a lot of experts in our country begin to give attention to and study educational value of online games. They attempt to use the good aspects of online games into education, and then the conception of educational games comes into being.Educational games are developing based on the development of computer technology and network technology. They have the advantage of online games, but they are different from normal online games for entertainment, also they are different from traditional classroom teaching. Educational games can build a free, harmonious and interesting study environment for students. Also, educational games are useful for thecultivation of students'studying interests and manipulating ability. Educational games have a lot of important uses in many aspects, they can enlighten students'thoughts, cultivate students'ability of finding questions and problem solving, promote the information literacy of students, cultivate students'innovation and cooperation capability. In this thesis, the author analyzes the reason of educational games comes into being, the current situation of educational games home and abroad. Based on this, the author discusses the theoretical basis and technological support of educational games, analyzes the problems which appear in the process of development, operation and application, advances application and development mode of educational games. In the end of this thesis, the author depicts the prospect of educational games and points out educational games are the trend of development of educational software and online games in the future.
