As more and more psychological problems have found in college students in recent years, the subject of education in college students' psychological health has become important. Meanwhile, self-esteem and interpersonal relationship, two critical factors which have affected on college students' psychological health, have been paid much emphasis. The Satir Model, as an effective tool to improve interpersonal relationship, has been extensively applied in western countries in common people, people in business management and those who are facing specific psychological obstacles, with a large amount of researches which are to demonstrate its productive results. However, its application in China is still in incipient status. Few researches, especially those in college students, are done in this field. This research is to explore the application of The Satir Model in improving the self-esteem and interpersonal relationship, to seek for a new effective counseling approach for college students in helping them identify their inner resource and draw on it, to improve self-esteem and inter-personal relationship, and to make them live with increased confidence and more balanced attitude to life.Laboratorial researches combined with case study methods were adopted in this research to apply The Satir Model to intervene the self-esteem and inter-personal relathionship of college students in group. Analyses, discussions and conclusions from the results were also made in these reseaches.The research recruited 32 college students as subjects. The group was divided into experimental group and control group. Using experimental-control group pre-experiment and after-experiment test design, the research was held once a week for about 2 hours per session. The group counseling lasting 8 weeks was given to the experimental group, while no intervention was given to the control group. The results were analyzed in investigation questionnaires, case study and group member feedback. As the results indicated, the marks of self-esteem and interpersonal relationship of experimental group after-experimental test had significantly higher than before (p<0.01). Their feedback about group effect and satisfaction was relatively high. This thesis has also included qualitative research results to explore the effective factors in The Satir Model and given implications on future development with experience review and reflection.The conclusions from this research are as follows:1. The use of The Satir Model to improve the self-esteem and interpersonal relationship is proved to be effective in this research.2. The Satir Model is based on personal-centered belief, with flexible and pratical implications. Thus, it can be suitable to apply this model in student group in psychological eduction of colleges and universities.3. The developmental group activity from this research design can be a practical way to improve the self-esteem and interpersonal relationship of college students.
