In the beginning of 1990s, massive urban reconstructions were started in Shanghai. In order to make room for municipal infrastructures, lots of inhabitants were driven out from urban center to urban border. Moving from urban center to border is not only displacement in residence, but also the reconstruction of social relationship and community life. However, the centre-to-border transportation system was still on the map of city planning and the supporting facilities of urban residence community were still in construction, which ruined inhabitants' normal life badly. In this paper, the author chooses Z community in Shanghai as a study case and tries to describe the changes in inhabitants' family structure and living pattern after resettlement. To find out what influence does the resettlement have on inhabitants' family and how the family members react to the pressure coming from the government and outside as well.The paper is composed of five different parts. The first part is introduction. The author reviews the research on the changing of family structure, the relationship between housing and family structure, living pattern and urban inhabitants, and then puts forward the academic hypothesis of this paper, that is resettlement may lead to the miniaturization of family structure. In the second part, the development of family structure and living pattern after resettlement is revealed, according to the data gathered from the neighborhood committee and the inhabitants. The third part describes the forming of family strategy during urban house demolition. The author discusses every step that the family and its members take when facing to house demolition from three levels. The fourth part is concerned about the restructure process of family. New family structure and living pattern formed when family members were trying to solve difficulties after resettlement. The fifth part is devoted to research annotation and reflex. First, the author discusses the characters of urban inhabitants. Then she points out the weakness of urban refurbishment. At last, the author believes that there is still a gap between the real living pattern and the ideal living patter of urban family.
