"Open lesson" is the common name of teaching practical activities for teachers organized by school or teaching & research department. During the 50 years development of open lesson, its essential teaching & research value is gradually weakening while the external utility value is growing and becomes a life style in a "cultural" sense, i.e. a peculiar open lesson cultural phenomenon. The study figures out this cultural phenomenon on cultural sociological visual angle, critically probes into the connotation, characteristic and origin of open lesson culture through text analysis, interview and on-the-spot observation, etc. and brings up reforming strategies for open lesson to return to the essence of teaching & research.This paper represents the reality life and inner feelings of open lesson executor, students, observing teachers, school leaders, teaching & research personnel, etc, reveals all sorts of actions that go against good faith under the gorgeous external representation of open lesson and further traces back to the reasons: the heavy professional pressure of teachers, low specialization level, influence from cultural psychology & social utility, evaluation system bondage and slow development of the connotation of teaching & research, etc. Look beyond, teacher evaluation system must be reformed to make open lesson return to its nature. Get rid of the utility values added to open lesson such as competition, assessment, etc and focus on schooling to derive grass-root school-based teaching & research culture and promote the professional development of teachers.
