Tujia and Miao Minority Autonomous Prefecture of West Hunan (short for West Hunan in the following), the only autonomous prefecture of ethnic minority in Hunan Province, is the only site that is included in the strategy of developing the western area. The types of traditional sports in West Hunan includes the ethnic activities popular among the people there as means of physical exercises, which are considered as the important content and means of developing nationwide fitness programs in the ethnic site and as critical sources for physical education curriculum. In the year of 2001, the Ministry of Education issued a new syllabus of physical education that advocates a positive exploration and utilization of traditional ethnical and folk resources in physical education. My starting point of study: how to introduce traditional resources into physical education curriculum, how to evaluate its development in the PE class, and how to explore a regional curriculum with high adaptability to teaching practice in school on the basis of the needs of three-level curriculum management.This thesis, by means of materials, visiting, on-the-spot investigation, questionnaire and statistics, etc., classifies the traditional sports items in West Hunan. Meanwhile, the article defines the traditional resources of PE curriculum and its components, and surveys the present conditions of physical education resources in primary and middle schools in West Hunan. Its purpose is to find out the current situations of human resources, material resources, resources of traditional sports items and information resources in traditional physical education, to take note of some quesstion when we explore and utilize the traditional resources of physical education, to put forward some suggestiones for the traditional resources of physical education. And this article also provides some cases of practices in development of traditional resources of physical education.The results of the research are as follows:1. The authorities and PE teachers in primary and middle schools of West Hunan lag behind in their education conceptions and are unaware and incapable in the recognition, exploration, and application of the curriculum resources. And the PE teachers are not enthusiastic in teaching. However, a few teachers are creative and have made some valuable attempts in the development and the utilization of curriculum resources. 2. In the process of exploring traditional sports resources in primary and middle schools in West Hunan, the teacher and student resources are developing well. But the other types of human resources in and out of school have been overlooked, and thus need to be paid more attention to.3. The economy in West Hunan is relatively backward. Therefore, little funds is put into physical education, and PE teachers and equipments are in serious shortage, which restrict the development of physical education in West Hunan. The development of traditional sports resources in primary and middle schools in West Hunan is still in the elementary stage. Only a few PE teachers have explored and made use of the traditional sports facilities.4. The teachers attach much importance to the students' interests in traditional sports items. Most of the teachers have the conception that the exploration and utilization of traditional sports resources should depend on the development condition in urban or rural areas.5. The forms of traditional sports in primary and middle schools in West Hunan are relatively dull, and the way of utilization is relatively simple, the prime reason is the insufficient condition.6. The on-job education for the PE teachers is relatively backward, resulting a condition that some teachers are vague to the concept of curriculum resources and don't what to do when they attempt to explore and utilize the traditional sports resources.7. The department of education has not established a system that ensures and encourages the exploration and utilization of traditional curriculum resources. Therefore,the maxim and optimality of exploration and utilization can't be realized.I hope my research can be useful for the exploration and utilization of curriculum resources in other minorities like West Hunan.
