Beijing won the right of holding the Olympic Games, the prospect of martial arts attracts people's attention again, and requirements for martial arts talents are higher than before. As the major of physical education which aims to train martial arts teachers, its development should fit in with the new situation so that we can succeed in cultivating excellent PE teachers with comprehensive martial arts abilities. It is more evident that martial arts specialiezd course, as the "matrix" of cultivating martial arts talents, is serving for society's need for these talents. The quality of the course is good or bad will immediately affect the realization of the goal of cultivating talents majoring in PE. So, the setup of martial arts specialiezd course in PE department of university.According to "the Physical Education Specialty Course Program for National Universities" issued in June, 2003 and "the Outline of Teaching Guidance for Various Major Courses of Regular Physical Education Specialty in Common Institutions of Higher Learning" issued in 2004,I consulted a lot of books and research achievements on teaching theory, training, statistics, cultivation aim, teaching reform, course arrangement and martial arts. Though questionnaires and interviews for physical education majors and martial arts teachers in Hubei's 10 universities, including Huazhong Normal University, Hubei University, Jianghan University, Wuhan Institute of Physical Education, Yangtze University, Hubei Normal University, Xianning College, Xiangfan University, Xiaogan University and Hubei Institute for Nationalities, I made a classification and a statistic analysis on status quo of martial arts specialiezd course, combining with literatures and utilizing mathematical statistic method, comparative analysis method and reasoning. Research of the status quo includes the course's cultivation aim and standard, ratio of period to course credit, usage of textbook, selection of teaching content, information of professional teachers, teaching conditions, social practice and employment situation of students of the course.The result of the research indicates that although regular offer of martial arts course can be guaranteed in universities of Hubei province, conditions of field and equipments are poor and most of these universities narrowly or cannot fulfill teaching's need. Both period and course credit of martial arts specialiezd course are different in different schools, which caused imbalance of the development of the course in Hubei province. Martial arts textbook far from satisfy teachers' and students' demand-the depth and width of the textbook are not enough; the arrangement of teaching content is inconsistent with students' need; the teaching methods and instruments are humdrum, and students' abilities of teaching martial arts are ignored. Furthermore, some spirit's essences of martial arts specialiezd course are not embodied very well in the entire teaching process, which is reflected by not setting scientific guide thinking in mind, only paying attention to explain motional techniques and manners but ignoring the understanding of body-building theory and the indoctrination of martial arts spirit. According to the problems existing in martial arts specialiezd course in universities, this paper will give some reasonable advices and suggestions: It's important to adjust the localization of the curriculum goal, and pay great attention to the student's balanced development. Not only does the martial arts' teaching material's construction need to be strengthened, but also a set of teaching materials which suit the professional course of the martial arts should be revised in the original foundation. At the same times, reforming martial arts' educational model and taking an inspection in the union way using "the multi- angles, omni-directional" are also very essential. In this way, we can not only establish a set of comprehensive martial arts teaching appraisal system, but also set up scientific teaching guiding ideology. From these, the martial arts teaching method can always be unceasingly developed. We must improve the disadvantageous teaching condition to create a good martial arts teaching environment for the teachers and students, pay more attention to the teachers'quality and the according unification between the students'synthesizing capacity and the social demand.
