Modern society is developing into a consumer-oriented society, in which consumption plays a leading role in national economy. Thus, it is crucial to improve the residents' consumption skills and ameliorate their living standards. Education can not only promote the development of human resources but also enhance the cultivation of people's consumption skills, improve their skills to enjoy and develop themselves as well as their working skills. However, there are still deficiencies in this respect in the theories on the relations between education and consumption. The theories of consumption economics and education economics can be applied as the departure to analyze the influence of urban residents' education level on their consumption skills by investigating the current consumption conditions in cities. First, the notion of consumption skills is delimited, including the contents and influential factors. Then, we can randomly sample consumers in the targeted areas and interview some of them to perform a multi-dimensional empirical study of the relationship between education level and consumption decision-making skills, skills of choosing and using products, service consumption skills, consumer rights protection skills and special consumption skills. On the basis of the above-mentioned analysis, the relationship between education and consumption is explored and the focus is finally turned to the significance of this study. The results of this analysis show that education has an important effect on people's consumption skills and especially plays an indispensable role in their service consumption skills, consumer rights protection skills and special consumption skills.Consumption skills constitute only one aspect of consumption economics. The study on consumption skills is not the ultimate goal but an approach or a means to probe into the relationship between education and consumption. Education can help to improve consumers' consumption quality, meet their consumption needs, ameliorate residents' living standards and promote their all-round development. Therefore, it is necessary to re-assess education economics which is based on human resource centered theories.
