The teaching of novel is one of the important tasks in the Chinese teaching in middle school, and it plays an important part in the Chinese liturature education. In the new Chinese curriculum standards special emphasis is laid on cultivating and improving the appreciation ability to the novels. Novel is one of the favorite styles for middle school students. Students like to read but hate to learn them. And Chinese teacher often neglect the characteristics of novel during their teaching, which makes the teaching of novel dull and boring as well as low efficient. In order to change the current situation, the author propose that we should organize the teaching according to the characteristics of novel.In teaching, we should guide the students to analyse the story and characters in novel and investigate the theme of the novels. Besides, the author think that we should lead into the analysis to the forms and the writing technique from the opening aesthentic view and be moved to comprehension of the novel. And at the same time the author explore the teaching that are concems with narrator, symbol, ironic and description.The study is aimed to investigate the existent problems in the teaching of novel and the solution to them by the reflection and study on the present teaching of novels and findlly find out a new and feasible approach to it to open a whole new aspect of novel teaching and cultivate and improve students'appreciating competence to the novel.The thesis consist of five parts.Introduction. In the introduction the autor explicate the reasons for choosing the topic, the scop of the study and its meaning from the aspect of the teaching aim of novel and the current situation of the teaching of novel reading in middle scholl.Part one is about the teaching of plot analysis. The author think that we should make full use of the effective methods such as formulating the title, retelling, writing for reading, movie appreciation etc. to guide the students to feel and grasp the plot and the story from the whole. On this basis we can conduct the students to find out the clues of the novel, make clear the origin and development of the plot, grasp the focus of the conflict and the pitch of the whole story, appreciate the ingenuity the writer have to organize the plot, and discuss the effect that the plot have on molding the images of the characters and showing the theme.Part two is about the teaching of analyzing the image of the character in the novel. Currently, when guiding student to analyse the image of the characters, teacher are always too partial to label them with social stratum and cut off the relations between characters and the story or environment. These static analysis will not only destroy the image of characters but also frustrate students'interst in novel. Hence, the author propose that we should base the image analysis on human-centered thinking and try to guide the students to feel and grasp the image of the characters from the means that the writer use in molding the image and the relations between characters and the plot or environment. We must encourage and respect students'specific view on the characters. In order to avoid the misunderstanding to the characters the teacher may act as a guide, leading students to read and undestand the characters reasonably.Part three is about the teaching of investigating the theme of the novel. The author think that when discussing the theme of the novels we should help students walk out of the limitation of unitary understanding. Besides social and his corical aspect, we can analyse and comprehend the theme of the novel from different aspects such as the aspects of culture, form psychology, anthropology and so on, but the teacher must control the degree to this poly-comprehesion and pay more attention to the whole to avoid the radom. And we must guide the students base the comprehesion on the text.Part four is about the study on the teaching of appreciating the technique and form of the novel. The charm of the novel comes not only from the complicated story. Lifelike characters, but from the techique the writer uses to create the story. However, the analyzing and comprehending to the techniques and forms are the most neglected ones in the teaching of novel reading. Therefore, the author think that it is necessary to analyse and comprehend the form of the works from opening aesthetic view, widen the space of novel teaching, so that the novel teaching can become more overall, more steroscopic, and have more flavor of novel. In this part, the writer also discusses the teaching on relevant narrator, symbol, irony and description from the view of its necessity and the starting point of teaching.
