The Educational System of Self-taught Examinations is a pioneering work in the history of our higher education. In the past 25 years, a large number of talented people have been trained by the system. ESSE has promoted the development of our economy and society, becoming a valid style to run large-scale education for the developing countries. At the present time, there appeares many new problems with the development of ESSE, so clarifying its position in our higher educational system and investigating new ways to make it develop better and faster have become an important topic.From the view of the system point, on the foundation of analysing its process, the dissertation firstly discusses that ESSE is a system innovation and plays an important part in our higher education system, trying to identifying its contents; Secondly, based on investigating the characteristics of mass higher education abroad in the process of its development, the dissertation argues that, With its system advantage, ESSE has not only enlarged the scale of our higher educational system, but also promoted its diversification and openning as well as strongly pushing forward its mass process. In the end, to find the role that the system plays in th process of the devolopment, the dissertation argues that strengthening system research and innovation, consummating its contents are the fundamental force to ensure the better development of ESSE. The dissertation also gives out some constructiving opinions for the system innovation of ESSE which are based on the practice and experience.
