Over the recent years, many research reports have showed that a lot of teens aresuffering behavioral problems. Foreign literature reports that in foreign countries themorbidity rate of behavioral problems is 5-30 per cent, most Chinese research resultsindicate that the rate is 10-16 per cent. Moreover, the rate is on the upward trend.Because of their mental deficiency, capricious emotion, poor self-control, studentswith Mental Retardation suffer more prevalent and more serious behavioral problems.These behavioral problems will hinder their development, and pose serious effects ontheir current study and their work and life in the future.By means of psychological consulting and psychotherapy, combined with casestudy, psychological barriers, such as anxiety, self-abasement, apathy, capriciousemotion, slacking attention, etc. of the children with normal intelligence, and theirbehavior problems like study-weariness, lying, assaulting and cheating can beeffectively cured. However, as far as RM students are concerned, some other meansare needed. "We may approach this problem from economic, social or medical angle,but finally we will conclude that we should resort to sport items, which is also the bestsolution."The Special Olympics, which provides physical training and competitions for allmentally retarded children and adults in the world, is flourishing around the world,especially in China where the Special Olympics has achieved magnificantachievements and won a lot of praise from international community. The SpecialOlympics provides hopes for mentally retarded families, help them overcomedifficulty, tap their potentialities, provide an opportunity for them to show their talents,and encourage them to mix themselves with the society and to adapt to the society.Meanwhile the Special Olympics also plays a positive role in developing the abilitiesof the mentally retarded to control and adjust their behaviors, which is needed for anindividual to adapt himself to the society.This study, by means of questionnaire, interview and literature analysis, exploresand analyzes the types and characteristics of behavioral problems among RM students.Using Achenbach' s scale of children's behavior as the instrument, the researcherinquires into some Special Olympic athletes in Zhejiang Province to investigate theinfluence of Special Olympic sports on the behavioral problems among RM students.Conclusions of the thesis are as follows:1,After their participation in the Special Olympics, generally MR students' behavioralproblems have been significantly improved and their unhealthy conducts have beeneffectively controlled. In comparison with scores in the post-test, behavioral problemsof experimental group were significantly improved compared with control group andits pre-test. Among them, law-breaking behavior and aggressive behaviors weresignificantly changed (p<0.01), depression, social shrinking, division forcing, hyperkinesias and total scores of behavioral problems were all significantly changed(p<0.05), and only body complaint, sexual problems, and cruelty had no significantdifference (p>0.05).2,There are slightly different effects students' behavior problems after theirparticipation in different kinds of sports and in different level of the Special Olympics.In cruelty sub-scales, the students who participated in team events were moresignificantly changed than the students who participated in individual item. while indivision forcing sub-scales, the students who participated in individual item weremore significantly changed than the students who participated in team events. Theother sub-scales and total scores of behavioral problems had no significant difference3,MR students'sociality in general are improved significantly after their participationin the Special Olympics. The effects are significant in their behaviors and theirsociability (P<0.05), but not in their behaviors in school (P>0.05).4,There are slightly different effects students' sociability after their participation indifferent kinds of sports and in different level of the Special Olympics, the studentswho participated in national level of the Special Olympics were more significantlyimproved than the students who participated in province level.5,The reasons of MR students' behavior problems have been improved after theirparticipation in the Special Olympics are as follows:(1)After their participation in the Special Olympics, MR students' self-control havebeen improved and their aggressive behaviors have been reduced.(2)After their participation in the Special Olympics, MR students' consciousness ofsocial have been improved and their aggressive behaviors have been reduced.(3) After their participation in the Special Olympics, MR students' self-control andresistance have been improved, their law-breaking behavior and hyperkinesias havebeen reduced.(4)Participate Special Olympics, can courage MR students move out the self-closedliving satus, expand their living range,and reduce their depression...
