University teachers are the professionals engaged in educational and teaching work at universities, who do the duty of teaching and rearing and undertake the mission of training and bringing up advanced professionals for our country's socialist modernization. Good teaching ability is one of the basic requirements for the university teachers engaged in educational and teaching work, and it is also the fundamental guarantee for improving teaching quality at universities.In recent years, with the great development of higher education in our country, there still exist some problems, and the lower teaching ability of university teachers is one of them. Intensive research on the teaching ability of university teachers and development and improvement of this ability are of significant importance to the improvement of education quality, the promotion of teaching reform and the development of teachers'specialization.Performance Technology as a procedure and method of systematically solving performance problems is mainly used to solve the human performance or deficiencies. It is focused on the research and development of methods and approaches to helping to improve performance. Performance analysis would identify performance gaps within an organization and the causes of these gaps. Once these causes are identified, appropriate interventions can be designed and implemented to close the performance gap so as to improve the individual and organizational performance.Performance technology is applied in this essay to the study on the development of teaching ability of university teachers, and the model of the development process of teaching ability of university teachers is set up. Ideal patterns of teaching ability of university teachers of the times are outlined by the performance analysis. Research and analysis are performed on the present status of teaching ability of university teachers, and factors influencing the teaching ability are identified through the analysis of the causes of performance gaps, strategies of improving teaching ability of university teachers are raised based on the non-instructional and instructional intervention categories.This essay concludes as follows:1 the ideal teaching ability of university teachers consists of perfect knowledge structure, ability of instructional cognition, ability of organization and implementation of teaching, ability of monitoring of teaching, ability of teaching study, ability of systematically learning, etc.2 there exist certain gaps between present teaching ability of university teachers and desired teaching ability in knowledge structure, creative teaching, teaching monitoring, modern education technology and so on3 though lack of knowledge and skills is one of the many factors influencing the teaching ability of university teachers, organizational and environmental factors are not negligible that are often ignored before when studying the teaching ability4 utilization of performance technology leads to that appropriate interventions should be implemented to develop the teaching ability of university teachers systematically. One is the adoption of education/training as an intervention strategy. The other is the comprehensive utilization of non-educational intervention strategies such as environmental support, criteria for academic professional appointment, incentive system, evaluation system and so on. Only in this way can the teachers'enthusiasm and initiative be fully aroused, their own potential be fulfilled so that the teaching performance should be improved much better.
