The quality of the teachers is of fundamental importance to the educational undertakings because the quality of the teachers decides the level of educational development. Young and middle-aged teachers are a crucial force of the sustainable development of the universities. We should take an effort to cultivate a properly-structured team of young and middle-aged PE teachers of high moral standards, advanced teaching notions, high quality, innovation for the sustainable development, which is essential to realize the harmonious development of PE education, education, economy and the society and to ensure the intellectual support for the future development.This dissertation focuses on the issues of professional development of PE teachers of universities and colleges in Shanghai by means of making reference to the related books, conducting interviews and summarizing and analyzing the materials. I hope this dissertation will provide some new ideas to the PE teachers in Shanghai and offer, to some extent, some theoretical mentality for the improvement of the professional position and professional skills of the young and middle-aged PE teachers. This dissertation consists of an introduction and the main body that is composed of three parts.The first part is a comprehensive summary of the professional development of the teachers. Due to the fact that the research on teachers'professional development is still new in China, there are not many dissertations that directly focus on PE teachers'professional development in the educational arena. Consequently, this part combs the research results of teachers'professional development by both Chinese and foreign researchers. Firstly, I will analyze the tendency to professionalization of PE teachers, considering that the professionalization of PE teachers is a necessary requirement of our times. Meanwhile, I will point out that the professionalization of PE teachers will help improve the professional skills and position. Secondly, I will analyze some general principles of the stages for PE teachers'professional development and the research on professional development by the Chinese and foreign teachers. I will point out that the training or the further education of PE teachers should be adapted to suit their main needs. Only by providing proper help and support according to their different developing stages can the young and middle-aged PE teachers benefit from it.The second part is an analysis of the professional development of young and middle-aged PE teachers of universities and colleges in Shanghai. I will mainly analyze the basic situation, professional attitude and professional skills of the PE teachers according to the results of the survey and the interviews. By comparing with the research of PE teachers'professional development process in the first part, I will find out some main problems of the young and middle-aged PE teachers in their process of the professional development and I will analyze the reasons why there are such gaps.The third part is a strategy research of the professional development of young and middle-aged PE teachers of universities and colleges in Shanghai. I will analyze from the perspective of internal and external strategies with an emphasis on the internal strategy of PE teachers professional development that is internal strategy is learning to study and learning to teach, and on the exteral strategy that is further education. The objective of this dissertation is to get rid of the misunderstanding resulting from a set of unitary values with an emphasis on sports skill in the process of PE teachers'professional development. The aim of this dissertation is to establish a kind of professional concept with a view to educational wisdom for young and middle-aged PE teachers, provide some reference to young and middle-aged teachers.
