The flourish of network techniques gives a deep impact on traditional education method. How students can benefit from the network environment and advanced information technologies has become a hot topic. We found a very serious problem that most of students are still following the traditional way when they study in network environment. Therefore, how to make students can efficiently study courses in network environment has become an urgent problem for information technology teachers.The characteristics and influence of network, and the students' self-learning modes in traditional education are investigated in this research. And three self-learning modes in network environment which are specified for the course of information technology in middle school are thoroughly studied. The three modes contains: task-based self-learning mode, network-based self-learning mode and self-exploring learning mode. The cases for all these self-learning modes and operation methods are also provided.The research background, current status, objectives and methodology used in this study is presented in the instruction part.In the first chapter, by studying literatures, the influences of network on education and its characters are elucidated, which put forward the motivation of the research on the self-learning modes in network environment.In chapter 2, the self-learning modes in traditional education environment are studied, and this gives the theoretical base for the self-learning mode in network environment.In chapter 3, the detailed procedures of how to setup the self-learning modes for information technology course in network environment are demonstrated. And also, some related cases are analyzed and discussed in this chapter.After analyzing and deducing, the final conclusion of this study is reached: The relationship of student and teacher should be rebuilt in the network environment, and put students in the first place. Such rebuilding is the precondition of setting up new self-learning modes. And then, to reach the goal of efficiently self-learning in network environment, we have to: break through the traditional way of education, in such way students are just being indoctrinated with knowledge and skills; integrate information technology course with other disciplines, improve the status of information technology in the culture education, and this also can help to enhance the students' quality of information technology skills; fully utilize the internet resources but under teacher's instructions. Through these methods, the efficient self-learning for students in network environment could be achieved.This research can help to promote quality education; enhance the example effect of excellent teachers; optimize the reallocation of education resources; stimulate the teachers' responsible feeling; promote the teachers to change their role in education, to improve the teaching method and quality. This research also can inspire the students, attracts them to involve the learning procedure, and get more motivated. In this way, students can learn how to do it by themselves, gain the sprit of innovation, cooperation and practice. This research can help students acquire better information technology attainment, from which they can benefit in their whole life time study. And finally, the students can get much sounder base for the future study, working and life.
