Entering the new century, China's higher education has been developing very rapid which engenders a group of application-oriented universities upgrading from vocational schools or Colleges to universities. This paper discusses how to strengthen Engineering Training Center construction work of the application-oriented universities. Strengthening Engineering Training Center construction is to meet three needs: First, the need to be a qualified undergraduate college. New Universities must strengthen Engineering Training Center construction according to the Undergraduate Teaching Evaluation Index System of the Ministry of Education. Second, the need of the higher education to reform itself. Popularization of higher education is increasingly job-oriented and calls for Engineering Training Center construction to strengthen practice teaching and thus enhance the students' employability. Third, the need of the society for high-tech talents. There are more and more high-tech factors in traditional industries, new high-tech jobs are keeping emerging, calling for universities to attach more attention to Engineering Training Center construction, and speed up the cultivation of application-oriented personnel.This study is divided into three parts. Firstly, having an investigation on application-oriented universities Engineering Training Center status. From concept, background, responsibilities, layout, inputs, operations, teachers, teaching materials, avail and other aspects to understand of the situation. Secondly, having a analysis on the problems of the Engineering Training Center and its causes. Probe into the major problems and causes and challenges facing. Finally, putting some proposals on strengthen Engineering Training Center construction. Reference developed countries (regions) and similar institutions of domestic institutions to the basic experience of Engineering Training Center building. To need to take the following measures: changing concepts of education, enhance people's understanding, grasp the opportunities for development; Improve the management structure, operational mechanism innovation, optimize the policy environment; improve the teachers level, project-oriented training, update guidance materials; the development of innovative ideas, enhance practical ability of comprehensive quality; increase the hardware investment, joint cooperation of universities-enterprises, actively serve the society.The main methods adopted in this study are as follows: the first part, we adopted a method of survey and interview. The interviewees were from the Shanghai Institute of Technology, also in Shanghai University of Engineering Science, Shanghai Second Polytechnic University, Shanghai Dianji University etc. and also by referring to relevant literatures about Engineering Training Center of similar institutions in China. Through interviewing, we have got to know the general situations of Engineering Training Center of application-oriented universities. The second part is summarization and analysis. By sorting, summarizing and reflecting on the survey data, the writer aims to research the problems concerning Engineering Training Centers of the application oriented higher institutions and their causes. The third part is comparative study. By learning from successful experience of institutions both at home and aboard, we will be able to put forward proposals to strengthen Engineering Training Center Construction of application-Oriented higher education institutions.This study provides a source of information and suggestions to effectively strengthen Engineering Training Center Construction of application-oriented universities, and at the same time, also has certain instructive meaning for improving the practical ability of the students.
