| School-based curriculum development (SBCD), which co-exists with the national curricula, originated from Britain, Australia, Israel in the 1970s. With the development of curriculum reform in basic education, as well as three-level curriculum management, school-based curriculum development (SBCD) has been taken into account in China.Krashen's (qtd. In Larsen-Freeman, 244) input hypothesis holds that learners need to be exposed to large amounts of comprehensible input which is meaningful, relevant, and interesting, in a stress-free environment. We believe ESL/EFL reading books should also have a great variety of authentic materials, as much as the coverage allows. Assuredly textbooks should always be supplemented with extra materials. The New National English Curriculum determines that besides textbooks students should read amounting to 360,000 words before graduation. So, the challenge for the teachers in high schools is how to improve students'ability to become an efficient reader and to make reading syllabus reasonable and scientific. The essence of SBCD is learner-centeredness. And the philosophy of learned-centeredness takes effect in the form of negotiated curriculum in which the views of the learners as well as the pedagogical agenda of the teachers are satisfied through a process of give-and-take. Thus, what gets taught and how it is learned are reached through discussion and comprise, which can be fulfilled through needs analysis and materials evaluation, adaptation and development in the framework of SBCD. Facing the demands of enacting the newly reformed curriculum guidelines for high school and implementing the idea of school-based curriculum development, the English reading teaching should be undertaken in the framework of SBCD.In the practical implementing of SBCD on English reading, we followed the five steps, setting up school curriculum committee, performing needs analysis, setting up the goal, implementing and evaluation. Based on the above steps we put the plan into practice covering adaptation, autonomous development and overall activity development. Through the study we conclude as follows.Firstly, SBCD on English reading is feasible, which achieve the goal that student-centered development act upon teachers'autonomous development interactively.Secondly, SBCD on English reading is a progressive recyclable process and the focus should always be on students'demands.Thirdly, the practice of SBCD on English reading satisfies students'individual needs at the utmost and students'reading experiences are enriched Also, students'overall ability improves a lot by reading.Last but not the least, through the study, we conclude that SBCD is a gradual process, in which various supports are greatly in need. It is assumed that only if effective leadership on the SBCD is taken into consideration, can the achievements be outstanding. |
