In the rapid development of vocational colleges, there exist a number of problems, of which the most popular and essential one is the incorrect orientation. Correct orientation means a choice of its position in the society and educational system; and it is also a theory guide to make policies and take measures. In a word, it relates a lot to the existence and development of vocational colleges. Firstly, this dissertation makes a close analysis of its present situation and problems in China, and the orientation of that in the West as well, gives a cautious analysis of its principles and items, and then draws a conclusion of its basic features. Besides, the dissertation puts forward some positive ideas about how to improve the quality of vocational college education: sharing modern educational ideals, expanding high-qualified effective educational scales, properly dealing with the relationship between curriculum and regional economy, and some professional demands, adapting itself to the development of colleges and the demands of enterprises, and stressing the importance of high-qualified faculty system. Finally, through the successful experience of Hunan Railway College of Science and Technology, the dissertation concludes that the development of vocational colleges must put themselves into markets by making full use of the all kinds of resources, distinguishing its main stream, opening proper curriculum in the hope of cultivating all kinds of students who can satisfy the demands of its equivalent markets.
