After exploring the definition, significance and background of English reading, the thesis analyzes the present status of the fifth and sixth graders' English reading in Shenzhen Cuizhu Primary School and problems which exist in their reading. Finally, the writer brings forward her ideas to solve the problems and help children improve English reading ability. The problems which the writer thinks exist in English reading of the fifth and sixth graders in Shenzhen Cuizhu Primary School are based on questionnaires and interviews with English teachers, parents and some pupils, which are scientifically planned, performed, collected, assorted, synthesized and analyzed. Consequently, the writer has an overview of English reading ability of the fifth and sixth graders in Cuizhu Primary School and gives reasonable solutions to some existing problems.The thesis consists of five parts:The first part analyzes the research significance of pupils' English reading ability on the basis of the definition of English reading as well as the relative theories.The second part makes literature review in four aspects: the status of pupils' English reading in English native countries, the status of English reading teaching in Chinese primary schools, factors to influence English reading efficiency, English reading teaching modes in China.The third part elaborates the research methods: questionnaire and interview method.The fourth part inquires into the present status and deficiencies of the fifth and sixth graders' English reading in Shenzhen Cuizhu Primary School. The writer claims the main problems as follows: the lack of vocabulary and expressions; lack of suitable English reading materials; absence of scientific reading methods and good reading habits; absence of background knowledge.The fifth part presents ideas and solutions about how to improve pupils' English reading ability. In the author's opinion, in order to improve pupils' English reading ability, it is necessary for the parents to treat the children's English study correctly, the school leaders to emphasize well-planned English reading teaching, the English teachers to enhance training and directing of English reading skills. It is important for them to make joint efforts to help pupils improve English reading ability.
