Reading is the main way of language study and one of the means for people to gain knowledge and information. For senior school students, reading stands out among the four skills, namely, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Therefore, English teachers should pay more attention to teaching of reading. At present, influenced by traditional teaching model, teaching of reading is still passive and teacher-centered, lack of the interaction between teacher and students, student and student, student and reading materials. Many students are weak in reading. This thesis makes a study on teaching of English reading, applies interactive model which is to make students be interested in reading, highlights students'position and thus improves their reading ability.Under the interactive model, reading teaching can be divided into three steps: pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. In pre-reading, the author points out the importance of background knowledge and predicting; During the process of while-reading interactions between the reader and the material, the reader and the author are emphasized; Post-reading activities advocate the interactions between teacher and students, student and student, group and group. The role of the teacher has changed from the traditional"authority"to that of an organizer, a guide, a mediator and a participator. The subjects participating in this study are 116 students of two classes in Grade 3 of Tanghai No.1 Senior High School. There are 58 students in both the Controlled Class and the Experiment Class. The same teacher teaches the two classes and the experiment lasted nearly four months, mainly training reading ability. The only difference is that the interactive model is applied in the experiment class while in the controlled class the traditional teaching method is employed. Three instruments were used in this study: two questionnaires, one interview and two tests. Through the experiment, the author draws the following conclusion:1. Interactive model helps students form positive motivation, increase reading interest and set up confidence.2. Interactive model helps students form good reading habits, master reading strategies and improve reading ability.3. Interactive model advocates cooperative learning, and helps students develop thinking ability and improve the ability to comprehensively apply English.
