In the new context of the curriculum, English teaching in secondary schools has gradually changed from the grasp of the language knowledge to the focus on the education of qualified personnel, emphasizing the cultivating of students'self-learning ability and lifelong learning ability. This situation requires high school English teachers modify their traditional teaching approaches, optimize students'methods of learning English, strengthen and train students'learning strategies and enhance their self-learning ability. By means of a review of the relevant documents, of questionnaires and analyses of an investigation on the students in the Experimental School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University, the objective of this study was to examine the status of students'self-learning ability and to explore effective methods for cultivating their self-learning ability. Through the investigation, we have found that most of the investigated high school students did not form good habits of self-study, and their self-learning ability was generally low. In other words, they lacked learning motivation, self-control ability and effective learning methods, etc. Based on the results of many scholars'research on English self-learning, we carried out an experiment on 36 subjects, training them to improve their self-learning ability. The results show that training students in grasping English self-learning strategies helps improve the students'self-learning ability, thus facilitating their English study and improving their English level.
