| There are lots of studies about mate selection at home and abroad. However, it is found that men didn't value women's virginity much. Evolutionary psychology hypothesized that men historically have faced the problem of ensuring certainty in paternity. To solve the adaptive problem, men have evolved distinct psychological mechanism. It is that when men peruse a long-term mate, they will show a preference for virgins.According to this theory, we assume that: male postgraduates value virginity implicitly but not explicitly. Firstly we used questionnaires which required men to rank 21 characteristics and then rate them to get some information directly.Secondly, we used two experiments .For the first experiment, a one-factor model design was used. The within-subject variables were budget (low, medium, or high) and 10 characteristics. Participants designed ideal marriage partners by allocating low, medium, and high budgets of points across characteristics. The second experiment also used a one-factor model design. And the within-subject variable was 10 characteristic (as in Study 1) which were written on cards. We traded the precision of percentiles for ease of comprehension by using three broad classifications of quality. Participants sought out information regarding these characteristics about alleged potential long-term marriage partners, with the goal of reaching a decision about the acceptability of each potential mate.Results: for male postgraduates, the most valued characteristics are Filial piety, Character, and Kindness. Virginity was only ranked as 13. The necessity is Filial piety, and the Luxuries are Health, Emotional stability, Sociability and good housekeeper. The Characteristics which Influence the decision to accept or reject potential mates are Filial piety, Character, and Kindness and Virginity. Through the whole study, it is apparent that male postgraduates value virginity implicitly but not explicitly. |
