The graduation thesis is a very important part of the undergraduate teaching programme and the realization of the university's goal of talents cultivation. It is a key criterion to measure the level of undergraduate teaching, and a main basis of the graduation certificate as well as the Bachelor's degree. But due to various reasons, the quality of the graduation thesis is on the decline. Some scholars propose to abolish the "adulterated" graduation thesis. This issue has aroused widespread attention, and the universities should consider it and do research on it. This research focuses on the functions, importance, problems, causes of the problems and strategies to improve the quality of the undergraduate thesis.This research chooses University H as a sample and adopts qualitative research method and quantitative research method; documents, interviews and questionnaires are among the main methods. Questionnaires are specially designed for this research. 380 of them are delivered to the undergraduates of 7 majors, and 325 are returned, with the effective returning rate of 86%. The result of the questionnaires offers the data which reflect the problems of the graduation thesis. Through the interviews with some veteran leaders of the university who specialize in teaching management, and some vice presidents of some colleges who are in charge of teaching, the necessary information is obtained. Meanwhile, the examination of documents which are possibly related to the quality of the undergraduate thesis and the analysis of the relationship between these factors and the quality of undergraduate thesis offer the necessary materials for this research.There are many factors that affect the quality of the undergraduate graduation thesis: the traditional education method fail to cultivate the students' innovation capacity and practical ability; the increased enrollment year after year makes the students' overall quality decline; teachers and students do not pay enough attention to the graduation thesis and put insufficient energy in it; the shortage of books, materials, teaching equipment, and management deficiencies all affect the quality of thesis. This research finds that the graduation thesis is a complicated and systematic project. In order to improve its quality, the sense of quality should be further enhanced, great importance should be attached to it, the monitoring and management should be strengthened, and effective network management should be created. We must strengthen the graduation thesis rather than weaken it or give it up.This research makes detailed analysis on the thesis topics, text forms, and text standardization, while there's little analysis on students' ability of applying basic theories and basic skills, academic or practical ability reflected in the thesis. In addition, the comparison of theses from different colleges and majors can be further studied in the future.
