With the appearance of a generation of university students born after 1980, their needs for autonomous development have become stronger than those of the previous university students. For example, their independence has increased and their personality and consciousness of autonomous development have become more striking, which affects the authority and work of university tutors. The thesis centres around the realistic problem that there is contradiction between the authority of university tutors and the autonomous development of modern university students. Through questionnaires and interviews, together with personal experiences, it examines the current state of university tutors' authority and the relationship between traditional teachers' authority and university tutors' authority, and analyses the current situation of university students' autonomous development under the influence of strong authority, weak authority and zero authority. It also suggests three ways to improve university tutors' authority: 1. To perfect the personality authority; 2. To improve konwledge authority; 3. To set up system authority reasonably. On the basis of these, it also puts forward the reasonable suggestions for the coexistence of university tutors' authority and students' autonomous development. The innovation of the thesis lies in that: 1. It tries to make a systematic analysis of the weakening and improving of university tutors' authority for there's little research on it in Chinese academic world; 2. It makes a survey of the current state of the weakening of university tutors' authority and tries to find out the reasons for it; 3. It deals with how to handle the contradiction between university tutors' authority and university students' autonomous development.
