The Necessity And Strategies Of Carrying Out General Education In Local Undergraduate College

Since 1990s,the higher education field has launched the exploration and practice of general education,and some achievements have been reached at some experimental university through the great efforts from all aspects. However ,there are still some problems, such as its practice in local undergraduate college which covers about one third of the whole colleges and universities has been ignored. The purpose of this article is, taking Taizhou College as the example, to argue the necessity of carrying out general education in local undergraduate college and to explore the useful strategies.This dissertation can be divided into 5 parts.Intruduction:This part explains the cause of subject selection,its current situation and problems. It also implement the research object,research methods,research content and recearch significance.Chapter 1: The necessity of carrying out general education in local undergraduate college. Firstly, the concept of general education is illustrated by adopting its definition by scholar Li Manli. Then, the necessity of general education is mentioned by analyzing the recruitment expansion of higher education, the over-divided specialiality, the development of market economy and the changes of graduates' employment situation, moral decline,the person-based education principle and the new curriculum reform.Chapter 2: The current situation of general education in local undergraduate college. Through the forms of questionnaire survey,interview,informal discussion and case analysis, some useful conclusions have been gotten. Although local undergraduate college such as Taizhou University has never directly put forward the concept of general education in talent training plan, many common courses like College Chinese, the course of ideological and ethical cultivation , music course etc,have actually contained the concept of general education. Yet there are still many problems, including the poor cognition, the weak awareness, the lack of teachers, the narrow subject coverage in curriculum, the lack of systematicness and scientificity , the shortage of education funds and the poor operating conditions and cultural atmosphere and so on, which desiderate to be solved. Chapter 3:The strategies of carrying out general education in local undergraduate college. By strengthening the consciousness of general education,setting specialized agencies, enhancing teachers team construction,reforming the current system of public courses, minoring second specialities, reforming teaching methods,and attaching importance to the non-couse curriculum,etc, it raises that local undergraduate college can change the education mould and carry out general education.The Ending: In this part the author ponits out the existing problems and deficiencies and determines the direction of further efforts.
