As a preservation, dissemination, and application of knowledge, academic nature is the essence of university, also the logic of formation and development of the institution. The management of University's needs to follow its academic nature, gives full play to the teacher to participate in the academic governance showing university special characteristic.The truth is that the academic authority for faculty is not striking in our universities, and the mechanism for participating in academic governance is lagged. All this causes the university academic nature not to be clear. Reviewing the academic governance in American universities, academic affaires are decided by the scholar, and the faculty participates in academic governance, maintaining the university to take academic body's characteristic well, simultaneously causing the university to adapt the social development requests.On the perspective of faculty participation in academic governance, the paper systematically inspects the faculty participation in academic governance in American universities, by using the historical methodology, the literature methodology, the comparison methodology and the case methodology. The paper, is mainly divided into four parts, except the introductory remarks and the conclusion.The first part discusses the nature of university theoretically, which makes a base for the following topic on the faculty participation in academic governance.The second part traces back to the faculty participation in academic governance from the historical angle, manifesting that the faculty to participate the academic governance was inevitability the university intrinsic logic development request.The fourth part describes the current situation of faculty participation in academic governance in American universities, including the established organization, the constructed system as well as the content to participate and so on, which gives us a clearer direct-viewing understanding the participation.The fourth part analyzes situation of the faculty participation in the academic governance in the universities of our nation, and provides some suggestions ,according to our specific national conditions.
