Education for mental retardation is an indispensable part of basic education. It shares common ground with ordinary education on principles, but differs from it on specific training objectives as well as tasks of compensating defects. To discuss music education theories specialized for mental retarded children, and find characteristic teaching methods in teaching practices is helpful for these children to be self-independent, and more adaptable to the society, which is also full of significant research values.With analytical methods of stratification and pushing-forward step by step, the thesis analyzes the physical and sychological characteristics of mental retarded children, and the values of music education. On the base of studying on the theories, the author puts forward some strategies for music teaching for mental retarded children. In the beginning, problems existed in present music education for mentally retarded children are demonstrated. Besides, issues like theoretical values, practical meanings, studies at home and abroad as well as main content of the thesis are dwelled on. Then, identification and characteristics of children with mental retardation is addressed. Following that, values of educating children of this kind with music are researched from the aspects of aesthetic education,rehabilitation training, quality cultivation, world outlook formation, development of intelligence factors as well as non-intelligence ones and so on.In the end, strategies of music education for mentally retarded children are elucidated on by taking account of the following facets: to form rational teaching courses for these children, to edit textbooks specialized for them and to study the existed teaching forms and methods.
