At the beginning of this century, the revolution of the basic educational courses has been started. The educational modes in the past, such as score priority, as well as being eager for quick success and instant benefit have been abandoned. The quality-oriented education has been included into the agenda as a key form. As an important constitution part of the basic courses, the music class has been paid unprecedented attention to. And new contents, new forms, new ideas, as well as new purposes have been carried out into the basic music education comprehensively.Undoubtedly, during this vigorous revolution of courses, the situation in urban area is different from that in rural area, where the strength and impact of the revolution can't be compared to those in urban area. Being an important part of implementing the quality-oriented education, the music education in rural area falls far behind that in urban area. Why does this situation happen? How can we change that? With the clues of these questions, the thesis would focus on the music education of primary and middle school in the rural area of Xiangxi autonomous prefecture, by making objective research to show the basic condition of the music education in rural area. With this specific example, we hope that we could find out something more deep behind the apparent situation as far as possible, and could make some constructive speculations and suggestions on the basis of scientific research.This subject firstly makes a research on 30 primary and middle schools in some counties of Xiangxi autonomous prefecture, such as Huahuan, Fenghuang, Yongshun, Longshan, Guzhang, Baojing, Luxi, Jishou etc,with a random sampling way. The objects of the research include the director general of the bureau of education, the dean of the county educational research office, leaders of schools, music teachers, students and some parents. The items of the research include analysis as well as assessment of the structure and quality of the teachers, the teaching equipment, some links in teaching, and the management of teaching. We especially make a research on the teaching concepts of the school's leaders' and teachers', the educational modes, the training of further education, and the situation of developing the music activities after class after the implement of new course standard. Having these latest materials, we try to analyze the influential elements behind this entire situation accordingly to the history and real condition of the primary and middle school in the rural area of Xiangxi autonomous prefecture, on the basis of the academic research of the music teaching theories, as well as the music course and teaching theories. We try to exploit the fundamental cause of these questions, and finally make an improvement of the management of the educational administration departments, the education and development of the music teachers, as well as the exploiture of the countryside music teaching material, all of which decide the complete change of the music education of the rural area in Xiangxi from the macroscopic view to the microcosmic view and then to the realistic view in class. And we advocate a series of countermeasure speculations on the three aspects—the alteration of the ideas of course implementing, the advocators of the course implementing act, and the complete renewing of the relying person's quality.By means of the the research and countermeasure thoughts about the Status quo of the music education of primary and middle school in the rural area of Xiangxi autonomous prefecture, this thesis hopes to give some theory and technology supports to the related educational administration departments in decision-making, striving for making the basic music education of rural area be able to receive the attention of the whole society and develop soundly. So in the age of "educational fairness", the rural students, as many as 75% of all the students in China, can enjoy the rights of basic education which concerns about life, characteristics, and personal development the same as the urban students.
